[edit] Creature description
Butterfree is a moderately large anthropomorphic purple butterfly. The many Pokédex extries available on Butterfree throughout the RPG series explains the following biological information: Its has a superior ability to search for delicious honey from flowers, able to search out, extract, and carry honey from flowers that are blooming over six miles from its nest. It can locate flower patches that have even tiny amounts of pollen. Its day-to-day routine is to flit about from flower to flower, collecting honey and rubbing it onto the hairs on its legs to carry it back to its nest. Its wings are covered with a dust that's both poisonous and water-repellant, which allows it to fly around and collect honey even in the heaviest of rains. In battle, it flaps its wings at high speed to spread its highly toxic dust, so be careful how you inhale if you see a flapping Butterfree.
In the games, it is of the Bug and Flying types, and is number #012 in the Regional and Kanto PokéDexes. Its species name is "Butterfly Pokémon". Its name is a combination of butterfly and free, while itself is based on the Cabbage White butterfly, Aporia crataegi more specifially. It evolves from the pupa-like Metapod at level 10 onwards, which itself evolves from the larval Caterpie at level 7 onwards. In competitive play, it is quite weak, but can wield confusion-inducing Psychic powers.
