Donkey Kong unfortunately holds a fairly shallow fanbase, and this causes few people to play him competitively. The result is a somewhat low ranking on most tier lists and a slow pace of advancing metagame. Nonetheless, there are many skilled Donkey Kong players who to this day continue to forward his game, and help define the style of new Donkey Kong users.
