Wall of Pain

From SmashWiki, the Super Smash Bros. wiki

(Redirected from Fence of Pain)
Wall of Pain in Brawl.
Wall of Pain (abbreviated "WoP") is a Jigglypuff strategy of barraging the opponent with high priority aerial attacks, exploiting Jigglypuff's horizontal air speed to weave back and forth. It can be used to juggle enemies offstage.
  • On the ground, Jigglypuff should move forward in the air with each attack, then once you hit your opponent, move back to where you started. This allows for quick attacks and keeps you out of range from any retaliations.
  • However, what makes this Jigglypuff's unique technique is when WoP is used to carry or juggle an opponent horizontally off the stage.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, this was done by interspacing Jigglypuff's B-air with jumps while moving off the stage, utilizing Jigglypuff's superior air maneuverability and high priority to always land a hit with each spin kick.
  • In Brawl, the B-air has lost its knockback, and the F-air has had its increased. This allows for an easier WoP, where Jigglypuff need not face backward. However, the B-air still has higher priority. Therefore, it is suggested that for on the ground, or working up damage, the B-air WoP should be utilized, but for juggling off the stage at higher damage, the F-air, with greater knockback, works better. (Although Stale-Move Negation means that switching between the two, if possible, is much greater. In fact, if solely working up damage, Pound can be incorporated into the WoP, as it too has high priority.)
  • WoP also functions best with Jigglypuff, as the F-airs and B-airs, combined with Jigglypuff's air speed, produce a regular horizontal knockback that is easy to follow up with and combo.

Tetsuya and AOB were the earliest prominent users of the technique, and they are largely responsible for its widespread use (see PuffStuff). The term "Wall of Pain" was coined by Smash World Forums administrator and retired smasher Amorasaki, a longtime friend of AOB. One of the most famous examples, commonly demonstrated by pro smasher King, is the use of Jigglypuff's multiple back airs to juggle an opponent off the stage horizontally.

Other characters with the ability to jump multiple times in mid-air, such as King Dedede, Pit, Meta Knight, and Kirby can attempt similar techniques as Jigglypuff's Wall of Pain. However, with slower air speeds, faster falling rates, and moves with varying directions and knockback, these attempts are less effective than Jigglypuff's original WoP. (Charizard, Snake, and R.O.B. with Robo Burner are not listed, as they only have two midair jumps or an Up Special as their multiple jumps. They can in no way reflect a truly effective Wall of Pain.)

Those characters with a somewhat established "WoP" are as follows:

  • Kirby, in Melee, can use a similar maneuver, the Fence of Pain, though it's not as effective as the WoP. In Brawl, the increase in Kirby's attack speed and priority make this technique much more effective, but his F-air's time lag and slower horizontal air speed means that it remains a Fence of Pain.
  • Meta Knight has a similar technique which relies on his rapid sword slashes in the air. These may be powerful with high range and priority, but the direction of the knockback produced is not always constant. This, combined with Meta Knight's very poor air speed, means that it is less effective than Jigglypuff's WoP.

[edit] Fence of Pain

The Fence of Pain (abbreviated "FoP") is a term refering to using Kirby's back aerial consecutively in a single jump, as both a defensive and offensive maneuver. The term is based on Jigglypuff's Wall of Pain, due to direct similarities between the two tactics, yet it's called the "Fence" of Pain, because "it has many more holes than the Wall" (Omnigamer). Due to Kirby's increased midair movement in Brawl, this technique is much more effective, arguably enough to be called a type of WoP.
