Latias (ラティアス, Ratiasu) is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

[edit] Creature description

Latias was introduced in the 3rd generation of Pokémon media as one of a pair of twin dragon-like birds, the other being Latios. Latias are always female and Latios are always male, and Latias are distinguishable for its red body and more innocent complexion. Like Raikou, Entei, and Suicune from the 2nd generation and Mesprit and Cresselia from the 4th generation, Latias is a "wandering" Legendary Pokémon; one individual Latias roams the game world, and encountering it in a particular area occurs completely by chance; to be caught, it must be encountered, weakened, and attempted to be caught repeatedly, as it will always run away the first chance it gets.

According to the Pokédex, though it is counted as a legendary species, they travel in small herds of several members. The species is highly intelligent and capable of understanding human speech, and it can telepathically communicate with people. Its body is covered with a glass-like down, and it can enfold its body and refract light with its down to either alter its visual appearance or turn itself invisible. It is highly sensitive to the emotions of people; if it senses any hostility, it ruffles the feathers all over its body and cries shrilly to intimidate the foe. It rarely makes contact with people or other Pokémon nonetheless, since it disappears if it senses an enemy.

Latias and Latios were featured in the fifth Pokémon movie, Pokémon Heroes. In the Pokémon RPGs, Latias is more defensively oriented, but if given a unique item called the Soul Dew, Latias becomes a powerful battling force nonetheless. It has a unique Psychic-type attack named Mist Ball.

[edit] As a Poké Ball Pokémon

When summoned, Latias disappears off to the side, and calls upon Latios. Then for a period of time, like bullets they will zoom back and forth across the screen, doing damage and knockback to who makes contact with them. They will also generate a slight wind that pushes characters in the direction they're flying.
