Nintendogs is a real-time pet simulation video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS handheld video game console. It is an award winning game series released for the Nintendo DS. Nintendogs is most notable for receiving a perfect 40/40 score from the popular Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu. The games let you assume the role of a dog owner, allowing you to care for your virtual dogs. There are several breeds that you can pick from such as the Labrador Retriever, Pug, German Shepherd and Shiba Inu, to name a few.
Originally, the game was re-released in three different versions - Dachshund & Friends, Lab & Friends (Shiba & Friends in Japan), and Chihuahua & Friends. Nintendogs takes advantage of the Nintendo DS' touch screen and microphone, which are used to interact with the dogs.
The success of Nintendogs has led to a variety of related products, such as trading cards and the Japan-only release of a line of plush toys.

The game was received surprisingly well by critics, being won a 40/40 by Famitsu Weekly. One of the few criticisms given to the game was due to its lack of ending, from Nintendo Power's review.

The Labrador Retriever appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as an Assist Trophy, which playfully blocks the screen in a fruitless attempt to "play" with the player,including Mario . Also, there is a sticker of a Shiba Inu, a Welsh Corgi, and a Miniature Daschund, as well as a Labrador Retriever trophy.
