PictoChat (software)

From SmashWiki, the Super Smash Bros. wiki

PictoChat is an instant messaging program which is built into all Nintendo DS's. In it, you can not only send messages to your friends, but doodles as well! There are four different chatrooms installed and each one only allows up to fifteen players. It's usefulness as been questioned because of the small wireless range it has. The player could type and draw on the bottom screen's lined space. They would then have to press "Send" and the message is sent to the upper screen and erased from the lower, so you can write something new. Every player in the same chatroom can view the same log of messages on the upper screen, and can copy messages back down onto the lower screen. At the bottom of the upper screen, it also displays a "Now entering" message to let you know when a friend has joined. The system also allowed players to view each other personal sayings and notified those in the room if it was somebody's birthday.

[edit] In Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a stage based off of the program, appropriately called PictoChat, appears. In Smash Bros., obviously there is only one screen, and therefore all the elements are rolled into one. It appears that the fighters do battle on the upper screen, because the "Now entering" box is the main platform, the scroll bar can be seen on the side and the connection strength box is in the upper left. Also, rather than the messages sliding up onto the top screen, the images are drawn on during the fight to add a little more twist. Also, whereas the top screen's background is normally blank on the DS version, on Smash Bros, you can see the lines which would normally be on the bottom to aid sentence writing.
