Pikmin's boxart
Pikmin (ピクミン, pikumin) is a real-time strategy video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo GameCube in 2001 and on the Nintendo Wii in 2009 under their "New Play Control!" Series. Pikmin is the first game in the Pikmin series of video games, designed by Shigeru Miyamoto. It is the prequel to Pikmin 2.

[edit] Story

The story is that Captain Olimar is leaving for a holiday in space, but Olimar says himself that he had no idea where his exact destination would be. At a certain point in his journey, he, according to the story in the game's manual, stopped to get himself a cup of tea and left his ship, the S.S. Dolphin, on autopilot. However, the system manages to guide the spacecraft into a meteorite and Olimar crash-lands on a strange, earth-like planet. Most of the ship is destroyed during the fall and the parts which have broken off get scattered around the world.

[edit] General Gameplay

Olimar discovers his ship is in bad shape; 30 parts broke of the ships main structure upon landing. Coincidently, Olimar discovers that he also has just 30 days to find these parts, or else the life-support system in his spacesuit will cease to work and he will be at the mercy of the poisonous oxygen in the atmosphere. Each day has a time limit (excluding the first) in which to find as many pieces as possible. The first day sees Olimar locate the Red Pikmin and learns that they are mobile plants and names them after his favorite carrots, Pikpik. He discovers how they multiply via onions (another name created by the Captain) and enlists them to recover his parts. They discover the engine at the Impact Site, which allows Olimar to leave the planet during the night to avoid the hostile creatures who feed at night.

The player must repeat the cycle of multiplying Pikmin, searching out parts, and leaving at night. Like any strategy adventure, some parts are inaccessible until a later date. Olimar requires the use of Yellow Pikmin to reach higher ledges and to use Bomb Rocks to explode walls, and Blue Pikmin to wade through water. The Red Pikmin also resist fire, but this ability is only required around twice. If the Captain manages to collect all 30 parts within the 30 days, he launches successfully with a trail of multicolored Onions in tow. There is also an "average" and "bad" ending, meaning players sometimes played the game appallingly to see them all.

[edit] In Super Smash Bros Brawl

  • The main character, Captain Olimar, is a playable character in Brawl alongside the Pikmin
  • Distant Planet appears as a stage, and incorporates elements of the Forest of Hope from Pikmin, along with the Onions and Bulborb enemies.
  • Various Songs are also taken from this game, such as the Forest of Hope, the main theme from the game, and a remix of the main theme incorporating the Stage Clear tune.
  • There are numerous trophies from the series.
  • Olimar's Final Smash, End of Day, reflects the feature in the game of when Olimar had to leave the planet at the end of each day to avoid him and the Pikmin being eaten.
