[edit] Character description

Professor Oak is easily the most well-known Pokémon Professor in the Pokémon world, his profession being a researcher of the Pokemon species within the Kanto region by default. Perhaps more importantly, he distributes handheld electronic Pokemon encyclopedias called Pokédexes to young Pokémon trainers beginning their journeys.

Each region of the Pokémon world that is the setting of one of the main series of Pokémon RPGs has its own Pokémon Professor which starts the player character off on his or her journey, such as Professor Elm of the Johto Region, Professor Birch of the Hoenn Region, and Professor Rowan of the Sinnoh Region. As is evident, a recurring theme to Pokémon professors is that their last names are based on species of trees. However, while Professor Oak is the resident professor of the Kanto region, he has also made major game appearances in every Pokémon RPG alongside the Professor of that RPG's respective region.

[edit] In Super Smash Bros. Melee

Professor Oak has made only one single cameo appearance throughout the Super Smash Bros. series, which is in this installment.

[edit] As a trophy

Professor Oak is one of the game's randomly collectible trophies:

[edit] Professor Oak

The leading expert on the study of Pokémon. It seems there are always new and mysterious species of Pokémon being brought to light, and Professor Oak is at the heart of it all with his insightful research. The Pokédex is one of his inventions: new trainers receive one, and a Pokémon to boot, when they start out.
