Shift via Attack

From SmashWiki, the Super Smash Bros. wiki

Shift via Attack or SvA, is just a fancy name for dodging an opponent's moves by using your attacks to move your hitbox. It also applies to disadvantageous situations that may happen due to it.

[edit] The Concept

Almost all moves move a character's hitbox in some way. Some attacks have more noticeable shifts (like Bowser's fsmash), and because of this are more useful for this technique. The important part of this technique is that it keeps up your offensive momentum (and in many cases disrupt an opponent's offense), instead of stopping it momentarily by shielding, rolling, or spot-dodging.

[edit] How to do it

  • Use an appropriate attack to dodge an opponent's attack.

[edit] Application

This is a very convenient technique, and fairly easy to use.

As an example, you are playing as Bowser vs Marth. Both of you are at high percentages; enough for either of you to score a KO with each other's fsmashes. The Marth lines up for a tipper. Knowing this, you can SvA with Bowser's fsmash to pull yourself out of range of Marth's tipper, and while Marth is leaning forward because of SvA, you hit him with an fsmash for the kill.

Of course, it's never this simple, because people will try to set up hit to be sure that you can't dodge them.

[edit] Advantages

  • Keeps your momentum going.
  • Can disrupt an opponent's momentum.
  • An attack is used to dodge, meaning that your opponent has to move around it instead of waiting for you to come.

[edit] Disadvantages

  • Can be worked around by clever opponents.
