Shade is an American smasher who works to help other players in his area (formerly, he helped online players more so) become active in the competitive scene for Brawl and Melee. Focusing primarily on hosting, Shade's successfully hosted well over 10 tournaments in a matter of two months during his days as an online host, reaching at least 40 participants per tourney. Since then, he has returned to Melee to begin a competitive scene in his hometown, because Melee is more commonly played than Brawl in this area.

[edit] In Brawl

While Shade mains Bowser, he plays a very wide range of characters, almost never relying on Bowser unless the opponent requires his utmost ability. His tournament secondaries include Samus, Ike, and Kirby (who also serves as his main in doubles).

A lack of technical skill forces him to make effective use of preying on his opponent's weaknesses, habits, and playing style flaws. Usually if he can't decipher an opponents playing style to counter it, he'll rely on offensive pressure and mindgames.

[edit] In Melee

Forsaking his Brawl playstyle in favor of perfecting the more technical character Falco, Shade focuses almost exclusively on Falco and Roy, only playing other characters in friendlies. While the application of such techniques in battle is still a work in progress, Shade seems to have a knack for mastering advanced techniques such as the moving Short Hop Laser and Waveshine in a matter of weeks, as opposed to the months it's been known to take other players to master these. The only problem comes from the fact that he tends to forget he can even do such techniques since he's so focused on the opponent at hand, and therefore doesn't have the opportunity to use them as effectively as he could.

[edit] Shade's Saturday Singles

Shade's Saturday Singles, or S3, is a series of online tournaments that Shade started hosting every Saturday night while he competed online. Even though he hosted smaller-scale tournaments in the past as well as co-hosted with JtM on rare occasions, this series was his main focus. A list of tournaments in this series as well as links to the tournaments themselves can be found here.

The series has been canceled due to Shade's switch to Melee.

[edit] Trivia

  • Shade is the only player with any competitive background in his entire hometown, and thus the task of organizing and hosting local tournaments is solely up to him as of right now.
  • Shade had obtained such a good reputation as an online host that on two different occasions, he was asked to take over a tournament that a friend of his was hosting by the attendees themselves. Not even the friend complained about it.
