Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (スーパーマリオランド2・6つの金貨, Sūpā Mario Rando Tsū: Muttsu no Kinka) is a Mario game for the Game Boy. Notable for being the last sidescrolling Super Mario platformer until 2006's New Super Mario Bros. and for being the first appearance of Wario.

[edit] Gameplay

After the first stage, the player can choose one of the six worlds avaible (and other special stages) to colect the Golden coins and defeat Wario. The coins in this game work as money, being capable to buy items like mushrooms to transform Mario. The six worlds available are:

  • Tree Zone - with stages ranging from a sap-filled base to aerial treetops
  • Turtle Zone - an underwater area including stages within a submarine
  • Space Zone - the boss of which is Tatanga, who returns from the original Super Mario Land
  • Pumpkin Zone - a horror/halloween themed area
  • Mario Zone - a giant Mario robot consisting of toy-themed stages often made of Lego-type blocks
  • Macro Zone - an enormous house in which Mario is the size of an ant (which are frequent enemies)

After beating these worlds, the player gets access to the final level, Wario's castle.

The Carrot powerup which is exclusive to this game gives Mario bunny ears, allowing him to fall much slower by either holding down the A button or by pressing it repeatedly.

[edit] Super Smash Bros. series

Wario, Mario's rival who first appeared in this game as the main villain, is a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee and is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
