Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (スーパーマリオ ヨッシーアイランド, Sūpā Mario Yosshī Airando, released as Super Mario: Yoshi Island in Japan) is a platform video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Super NES console. It was released on August 5, 1995 in Japan, October 4, 1995 in North America and October 6, 1995 in Europe, exactly 2 days after the North American release. While it does feature Mario in it, as Baby Mario, it is considered to be a game in the Yoshi series, due to the fact that the player controls the character Yoshi.

[edit] Super Smash Bros. series

Many of Yoshi's attacks and moves are from this game. Egg Lay, Yoshi Bomb, and Egg Toss are primary attacks in the game. Also, Yoshi's second jump (known as the Flutter Jump) originated from this game (although the signature grunt of effort did not appear until Yoshi's Story).

Characters from this game, such as Baby Mario and Baby Bowser, became trophies in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Also, a new stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl takes on Yoshi's Island's general look, a doodle-like appearance.
