Released in 1994 for the Game Boy before The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998) and after The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1992).It was re-released in 1998 as "Link's Awakening DX" for the Game Boy Color, with a few additions including color, a "picture" minigame and an extra dungeon.
[edit] Story
Link is seen, in the opening cutscene, steering a boat in an unknown sea during a storm. It is unclear why Link is sailing and where to, and he is struck by a bolt of lightning and the ship is sunk. Then, Link is next seen laying unconscious of the beach of Koholint Island, and Marin sees and rescues him. He is taken to her house and meets Tarin, who gives Link his shield. After re-visiting the beach, you obtain the sword, which is yours because it has the players name engraved in it.
Link learns that to leave the island, he must rid it of the eight evil invading Nightmares and free the Wind Fish from its deep slumber. Link scales every last inch of the island and defeats all eight monsters using the standard array of weapons, including the Roc's Feather which allows him to jump. He also has a Bow and Arrow, Bombs, Hookshot, Flippers, among others. Most of the dungeons, unlike most Zelda titles, are locked and need a special key to open. When the dungeons are completed, Link acquires a Siren's Instrument and once all eight are assembled, he plays the Ballad of the Wind Fish to the giant egg in Tal Tal Heights.
Inside the egg is a giant maze which requires a set of directions acquired from reading a library book with small print (the player has to endure a lengthy item-swapping procedure to obtain this, and it all begins with a Yoshi doll.) Then, Link must use his items to defeat different forms of the Nightmare residing in the egg, for each form has a significant weakness to a certain item. When defeated, Link climbs a staircase to meet the Wind Fish. The Fish states that the island is free, and that it will vanish from existance. The island is seen dissapearing, and before the credits sequence, Link is seen drifting on a piece of his ship's wood...
However, just when you think it really was all a dream, the Wind Fish is seen flying through the sky.
[edit] In the Super Smash Bros. series
In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the trophy of Marin (trophy), one of Link's awakening's main characters, can be obtained.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, there is an unlockable track which is a remix of the Overworld theme and the Tal Tal Heights theme from this game. A remix of Ballad of the Wind Fish was also planned to appear in the game, but was removed for unknown reasons.
