A CT Smash Scene Edit

I need some/a lot of help. I have little to no experience on the Smash Circuit. Hardly anybody is interested in a CT tournament here. Some people in my school that actually have Brawl moved on to Mario Kart Wii or just don't play often. The only competitive gaming tournament I've seen isn't even for Brawl (several people went to a tournament at GameStop in the Stamford Town Center for Pokemon: Diamond and Pearl versions; I went there sometime later on the day of the tournament, and I saw some people inside or near the entrance of the store still playing each other for fun; some people even had some extremely rare Pokemon that I eventually got through my friend's Action Replay [three that way, the rest traded from him]; I'd say their names, but you're probably clueless to the 493 Pokemon that exist, excluding the ones seen in the Smash games). Have any suggestions? I've never been to a tournament, let alone compete in one. I'm probably too young to host one. And, as I stated earlier, CT is a ghost town when it comes to Smash. Well, let me rephrase that. When I said Brawl tournaments, that's an understatement. There is no Smash circuit/scene in CT. I write the Video game section of our School newspaper (there were a few other people, but now I'm the only Video Game writer), and hardly anyone reads our newspaper that often (I even just use the newspaper, which is just colored regular paper, for airplanes; my fellow students say I'm quite good at that, but that's irrelevant, so moving on...). Quite frankly, people here just play Halo 3, Guitar Hero games, the Call of Duty games, etc. Really, these guys are just interested in M Games. As for AiB, I can't at the moment. Plus, I don't want to keep tourney opponents on my roster if it's maybe a one or two-time deal. Any other ideas? MarioGalaxy^{May Guthix be with you...} 04:13, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, that was everything in my mind at the moment. I wasn't thinking on the other factors. AiB, I can't "at the moment", as in it's late here, and my dad is sick (I think he may have Laryngitis, but I/we can't be sure). I'd join Smashboards, because apparently the more well-known smashers are there more often (I checked Mew2King's profile on AiB a week or two ago, maybe more, and the last time he was there was in June, and the most recent tournament he was listed in was in April), but I don't know how it works there, and it's annoying that I have to get an account there to see other smashers' public profiles. Well, actually, I was wondering, do you know if JtM's available to brawl today? You see, I've seen him put videos of your crew's brawls on his channel. I've got, maybe, about three videos of me brawling on YouTube. One link is on Cree's page, and JtM has the other two (team matches of me and my bro losing pitifully against RSO). I don't have the tech I need to put those videos up myself (I'm pretty sure I'd only need an SD Card). Or, if he's not here, you think I can just brawl anyone here? Hi, Shade. Always happy to help with another Trainer enthusiast. It really is true, despite what you may see in videos...you need to be good with all of them, or else you're going to encounter problems with winning at tournaments. The stamina is a factor for the competitive community's darling, Squirtle, more than any of the other ones; I was watching this one guy, Vanz, in a NY weekly match. He's a well-known Pokemon Trainer in the area, but he specifically kept Squirtle out as much as possible, completely ignoring most of Ivysaur and all of Charizard. He lost the match, despite his excellent use of Squirtle's awesome tilts and grab game. Didn't seem to care much about dash-pivot canceling down or forward smash, though...in any case, I'm positive he could've done better with knowledge of how to use the 'Zard.

Anywho, I don't really have a "decent" amount of experience, per se. I simply have significant experience with high-level tourney players in-person, and I've been to and participated in a few outside of the gobs of friendlies I'd have with PRiDE (the tourney-vet Yoshi) and some of my Rutgers buddies, who are good players like me but are not regular tourney goers. Also, for the record, I was reminded recently how AWFUL I am on Wi-Fi. People who play online constantly, as opposed to real-time matches, develop a different timing mechanism that allows them to cope with button lag, but generally find themselves weighty and overly responsive in real time. I don't want to seem like I'm talking myself up with nothing to show, should I do horribly online...hopefully that doesn't sound like a pre-johns, either. I just really prefer real-time play. I'm sensitive to HD and even Wavebird lag these days (the real pros manage regardless, I've noticed). But yeah, if you want to do some matches, I'm down...my AIM is SuperhackerMMX. I'll give you my FC then.

About Sirlin...Edit

So I checked out this guy's page to see what was up. He seems nice and well-meaning, so don't take this the wrong way, but I've determined his videos aren't worth paying attention to if you have a true thirst to become a competitively-viable player, online or off. His presentation is good, and the cause is worthy, but he hasn't really done the proper research into what he's showing, and it's evident in a couple of his videos (poor definition of "auto-canceling," underestimation of the amount of super-armor in the game, poor understanding of combos in Brawl). It's okay to start with, but contributing at Smash Wiki means you already need to be or are at least aspiring to be a level beyond that. Smashboards is the place to go for that (then you can bring your knowledge back here ^_^).

The biggest strikes against him, however, are his attitude towards light criticism (see his comments) and his station as an EVO organizer. EVO (the Evolution fighting mega-tourney) as a whole completely crapped on Brawl and Smashers this year after asking the SBR how to setup for Brawl, only to completely disregard the advice altogether by having items and Final Smashes on, as well as having a number of ridiculous banned stages available for play. Only a small handful of the pros even bothered showing up, and Melee world champ Ken Hoang ended up losing in the finals due to a relatively unknown ROB player lasering a Smash Ball from the entire screen away, despite having the match in hand. He recieved ridicule from those present and has since quit Brawl entirely because of how messed up the whole thing was. Even not counting his particular experience, there's little reason to trust anyone involved with EVO if you're a Smasher looking to move up in skill.

I'm not telling you this to belittle you or anything like that...it's just important that you find the best sources of information for improving your game, and not ones that are either limited or slightly-flawed in their scope. -- GdDmt - Steve-Combo!

Do you mind setting up a Brawl between me and him? It's just, I really haven't gotten anyone new to Brawl in a while. I brawled some kids in my school yesterday, but they're just novices who haven't even heard of the smash circuit (it was all Fourways, but they kept teaming me and trash-talking me over the phone at the same time; luckily, I didn't lose any of those matches). Anyway, that's getting away from the point. Do you think Flowel would be available to brawl today or tomorrow? I'm still working on making an AiB account (really, the age excuse is getting old; in actuality, it just keeps slipping my mind, due to the crud I have to deal with on weekdays...cough, school/hell, cough... and the crud they give me over the weekend), so I can't ask him myself, and I don't think he'll be able to be contacted on his SmashWiki talk page. Right, so...there are four boxes on the page, right? You only have to worry about the top box. That top dropdown is where you select your webirc. Click that and select "Rizon webirc". Then, you'll see a box titled "Nick". Change it to something unique, or it'll be automatically reverted to a guest name. I seriously doubt you can get away with Luis, but MarioGalaxy (provided it's one word like that) will probably work. To the right of that, you'll be asked to enter the channel name. Put #wtf as the name (hence their crew name, #wtfcrew). Also, you might wanna make yourself scarce...I mean, Flowel probably doesn't hate you, but you're not exactly...y'know...up there high up on his list of friends (I question my own placing at times).
